A Wonderful Discovery: Bodega Montesanco, a Family Estate with Native Wines to Enjoy in Good Company
The Costa Blanca is not particularly renowned abroad for its wine production, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth exploring and savoring its characterful wines. With a limited output in terms of volume (about three percent of the total, far behind regions like La Rioja, Catalonia, or Ribera del Duero), I nevertheless appreciated its typical wines, especially those intended for local and tourist consumption.
Having mostly known only the Rioja wines, I discovered scents and flavors typical of the region: Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, Tempranillo, Macabeo, Bobal, Giró… All of these fine productions are well distributed through family-owned bodegas and wine shops, established almost everywhere—even in the very heart of villages. In Ondara, I recommend Vinalia – https://vinaliavinotecas.com – which offers expert guidance and advice, whatever your budget.
You can also taste delicious bottles directly at the source. That’s how I discovered Bodega Montesanco in Teulada (10 km away) – https://montesanco.com. It’s a wonderful opportunity to relax in a natural setting and appreciate the family’s credo, which has championed authenticity for 60 years. Discovery enthusiasts will not be disappointed!

An example of sustainability: biodynamics, monoculture, and organic wines
Seated comfortably, enjoying the lush surroundings and savoring fine bottles, I had the chance to speak with members of the team. They are proud to maintain authenticity and honor their bond with the land. Thanks to mono-varietal wines that express the essence of their typicity, I discovered unpasteurized, non-standardized products. Here, character is not neutralized by blends that standardize the palate. Depending on taste, one can find powerful red fruits, minerality, earthy notes, plum, cherry… A beautiful range that pairs perfectly with the seasonal menu offered by the chef. I recommend checking their website, as the kitchen is not open every day or all year round.
A fine selection: red, rosé, white, muscat, and cava
For over 60 years, on marl and limestone soils, just ten kilometers from the sea, Montesanco has offered wines to suit almost every taste, while staying true to its guiding principle: producing authentic wines. You’ll appreciate both the saline notes and the warmth of the inland climate.

Món Bobal: red, long finish, creamy, balanced acidity, walnut, candied pear… fresh.
Món Monastrell: rosé, red currant, wild berries, eucalyptus… A feast for the eyes: ruby with subtle onion-skin nuances.
Món Macabeo: white, floral, citrus, pale yellow, aged on lees (hence its aromatic complexity). A true nectar in the heart of nature… Highly recommended.
Món Cava: from a small plot, 36 months of aging (both barrel + bottle), fresh, elegant, white fruits, long finish.
I hope this inspires you to discover this little corner of the Costa Blanca, where you can enjoy the region’s stunning landscapes, beautiful light, thoughtfully prepared local cuisine, and a terroir wine list full of personality. And also to support an ecological and sustainable culture.
See you soon for another discovery of the region… and happy holidays to everyone!
